Kill, Refurb, Marry: WDW Resorts

I first remember playing this game with friends in middle school, on our way to some sort of field trip.  Of course, then it was “kill, date, marry,” and we giggled a lot about all of the boys in our class.  However, the game has been taking on a new form in the blogging world, thanks to Melissa Sue from Mouse on the Mind and Estelle at this Happy Place Blog!  They have been playing Kill, Refurb, and Marry with various Disney related places or attractions, and have invited other bloggers to join them in the game this week!

Today’s topic is the WDW resorts.  This is a bit of a tough one for me, and I know my choices may be a bit controversial!  But here goes…

KILL:  All Star Sports

The All Stars are a good option for a value resort, but do we really need three of them?  Out of the choices, my least favorite theme is the sports.  I’m just not a sports fan, so it’s an obvious kill for me.  I’ve never stayed here, but I’ve heard it can get overcrowded with people from sports related conventions.  It also shares a bus with the other All Stars so that can get a bit crazy, in addition to being far from MK.  It’s the one resort that I really don’t have any desire to stay at, so for me it must go.

REFURB:  Contemporary

I know, a lot of people love the Contemporary.  And I hate to admit it, but if it hadn’t been for All Star Sports this is the one that I would have killed.  The Contemporary just doesn’t do much for me the way it is right now.  It has some great restaurants, with California Grill and Chef Mickey’s.  But one of the things I love about Disney resorts is the fact that they have such fantastic themeing.  To me, the Contemporary just isn’t as “fun” as many of the others.  It’s an extremely nice hotel, but to me it feels just like that – a nice hotel.  It has a lot of potential with the restaurants, the monorail going right through it, and the location.  When it was built it was supposed to have a very modern feel to it, but now to me the decor just feels outdated.  I would love to see a little more magic in the contemporary – maybe giving it a “classy Disney” theme.  Not over the top like the values, but tying it in more in other ways, like in the artwork around the hotel.

MARRY:  Animal Kingdom Lodge

This was a really hard choice, as Animal Kingdom Lodge and Port Orleans Riverside are both really close to my heart.  However, that magic of Animal Kingdom Lodge ultimately won me over.  I am a huge Animal Kingdom fan – it’s one of my favorite parks (tied with Magic Kingdom!).  I could just ride the safari over and over again, as I love to see the animals.  So staying at a resort where they are literally right in my backyard is incredible!  It’s a photographer’s dream, and I spend a lot of time with my camera there.  They also have 3 really great restaurants – Sanaa, Boma, and Jiko.  The meals I had at Boma and Jiko were some of the best meals I’ve had at Disney.  The decor fits in perfectly with the theme, and there are lots of really interesting activities going on at the Lodge, including opportunities to learn about the animals and African culture.

  1. Well I’d love to marry Kristen Stewart and Olivia Wilde…oh, you mean which Disney places I’d like to kill, refurb, or marry, I see…umm…right…ignore the Kristen Stewart and Olivia Wilde thing.

Anyway, I’m gonna change the question to which Disney attractions instead of resorts

    Kill: DisneyQuest…all of it
Refurb: The Magic of Disney Animation (make the show longer, more detailed, and get rid of Mushu)
    Marry: The Haunted Mansion

    • Interesting! I’ve never been to DisneyQuest. And I can totally agree with the Refurb of the Magic of Disney Animation – they need to do something more with that show! There may be more games of kill, refurb, marry in the future, so I imagine we’ll do Disney attractions soon too!

  2. I agree with your kill, I agree the Contemporary needs a refurb but I always want to marry it but I like your choice for Marry. This is soo hard!

    • Yes, we were lucky enough to have a savanna view and it was incredible! Even if you don’t, though, you can still get great views from all around other areas of the resort 🙂

    • Thanks! I think every resort is probably somebody’s favorite, so you can never be too sure 😉 In particular I have some friends that are absolutely in love with the Contemporary.

  3. The Contemporary doesn’t do it for me either. Like you said, the restaurants are great and it’s a perfectly nice hotel. I just don’t care for the “feel” of it, and definitely would not shell out that amount of cash to stay there.
