Kill, Refurb, Marry: Aerial Spinner Rides

When I saw the topic for this month, I was a bit stumped.  How many aerial spinner rides are there in Disney?  Dumbo comes to mind, of course, but aside from that how many are there?   Here’s what I came up with: Dumbo, Astro Orbiter, Aladdin’s Magic Carpets, Primeval Whirl, TriceraTop Spin.  I feel that all of these are in the air to some extent and they spin, so those are our options.  Interestingly, I haven’t even been on a majority of them, which made this month’s Kill, Refurb, Marry extra tricky!

Kill:  TriceraTop Spin

There are three rides out of the five I was considering that I haven’t been on, and those are the Magic Carpets, Astro Orbiter, and TriceraTop Spin.  The one I chose to kill was TriceraTop Spin.  As far as I can tell, it’s just a rip-off of Dumbo but with dinosaurs.  So it’s not really unique in any way.  I’m also not really a big fan of that area of Dinoland – I know what they’re going for, but I just don’t dig it.  I’d rather see that whole area re-done in a different way, with rides that are more interesting than your typical carnival rides.

Refurb:  Primeval Whirl

Honestly, I would probably just kill this one too in my above mentioned plan, but if I have to refurb something I’ll pick this since I like it slightly better than the Triceratop Spin.  It’s your typical Wild Mouse coaster, but I enjoy that now and again.  However, the biggest problem I have with it is the themeing.  I think we’re going back in time, but why?  What’s the story behind this ride?  I assume there is one, but it’s not made clear.  I’d either completely re-do the theme or do something else with the ride entirely.  Here’s a crazy idea – let’s make it more exciting by putting it inside a building!  That way we can use the darkness and the sudden turns and spinning of the vehicles to create much more of a thrill ride!

Marry:  Dumbo

I’m apparently not a huge fan of aerial spinner rides, but if I’m going to marry one it must be Dumbo.  After all, when you think of Disney World it’s the iconic ride that you think of.  It’s a classic, and it’s cute.  Plus, now that they’ve redone it to make it bigger and make the queue more interesting, it’s even better than it was before!

  1. I haven’t been on all of these either, but out of those I have I would kill Astro Orbitor (although I’ve only tried the Disneyland version), it spins too fast for me and it’s super squishy for two people (adults at least) in one rocket.
